Affordable luxury delights at Van Dyks

FINDING an understated luxury dining experience at a price that won’t break the bank is not always easy.

Eating out can be cheap but ‘great value’ meal deals don’t always live up to the taste test, and sometimes you just want somewhere with that extra special touch.

Hotel Van Dyk in Clowne has undergone an impressive refurbishment in recent times, so we decided to pay the Grill Room a return visit to see if it could deliver both on price and experience.

The new-look Grill room, which sits alongside the fine-dining Bowden Room restaurant, offers a ‘unique concept of Brasserie cuisine within a relaxed and contemporary visit’, according to the hotel’s impressive website.

Stepping in from the arctic cold, it was delightful to be greeted with luxurious and warm surroundings as we took our seats in the opulent but tastefully- decorated restaurant.

The menu boasts ‘Affordable Luxury’ and featured plenty of mouthwatering meals, from starters, salads and sandwiches to mains and a pleasingly-extensive choice of vegetarian options - many of which can be ordered as a starter or a main.

I plumped for the Pan-Fried Halloumi (£9.95) which was served with roasted vegetables and a sun-blushed tomato and balsamic dressing.

My friend took longer to deliberate - the choice is that good - but eventually went for the Escalope of Chicken (£9.45), served with creamed leeks, crispy Parma ham and a potato croquette.

I couldn’t help but think £10 was a lot for a main course but when our dishes arrived it was clear to see how Van Dyks sets itself apart from the crowd.

My dish was a delight - the roasted vegetables were dressed with an unusual warm salad and bathed in a fantastic dressing.

And my dining companion’s main looked equally appetising, accompanied by a little copper saucepan of home-made gravy.

But we hadn’t seen anything yet - I had to to order dessert and decided on the Warm Chocolate and Raspberry Brownie (£5.50) served with clotted cream and crushed berries.

What actually arrived was something I’d have willingly paid £10 for.

It came on a black slate with extra individual mini tarts and chocolates - all decorated with a white chocolate and raspberry compote flower.

It was a culinary painting made in heaven and worth every mouthful.

The service was friendly but we were waiting a bit too long at times - although the restaurant did fill up very quickly.

But the Grill Room definitely ticked the box for experience and price and I will definitely be making a return visit.

“Wonderful Wedding”

Hotel Van Dyk is pleased to pass on this fantastic review posted on Trip Advisor from a recent wedding held at Hotel Van Dyk.

"Our daughter and new son-in-law were married here last Saturday...and what a superb choice of venue it was! The day was absolutely perfect for us all - we were even blessed with glorious sunshine which made the setting even more perfect. The food - from the lovely canapés (especially the mini burgers and mini fish and chips!), to the the superb wedding breakfast and the evening buffet was faultless, tasty and beautifully presented. The service from the hotel staff was excellent...and the DJ played everything we requested which ensured a good time was had by everyone. The room in which the ceremony was held is so beautiful and intimate and at the end of the night our rooms were very comfortable and warm.
This was all brought together by the hard work of the wedding co-ordinators, with special thanks to Natalie, who is a credit to the hotel. She made sure the day ran smoothly in a very professional manner...we never had to worry about anything as she was always at hand - even taking out mulled wine and canapés to the bride and groom who were outside in the cold being photographed. (Natalie...the sausages are an excellent idea). Throughout the day we received nothing but compliments from our guests who all enjoyed themselves. Our daughter had a beautiful wedding, prefect in every way in a beautiful hotel and a day to remember... thank you Van Dyk!"

“Winter Wedding”

We recently held our wedding in December at Van Dyks and we cannot praise them enough.

The run up to the wedding was smooth with Natalie on hand to answer any questions. On the actual day Natalie was fantastic and is a credit to the hotel. She was calm and relaxed but at the same time ensured everything was in order to make our day perfect.

If you are looking for a wedding venue that can offer you great food, a warm atmosphere and a personalised service then book an appointment with Natalie and see if Van Dyks can make your day as special as ours was.

“Gorgeous boutique hotel with fabulous food!”

I absolutely love this hotel. I eat here with my family and partner on a regular basis and have been to a few of the events (comedy night, Christmas eve dinner) and stayed over, all of which have been great.

The decor is what I would describe as boutique style and personally think its spot on. Food in both the grill and the Bowden is brilliant, eaten here about 20 times over the past year and never had a bad meal. Prices are very reasonable for the food, but like others, I do think the drinks are a bit on the expensive side.

We couldn't fault the stay we had on Xmas eve 2010. The hotel was quite quiet so they upgraded the room, breakfast and service was great.

I love the hotel that much that we are planning on having our wedding here next year, as it is everything we want for our big day.

Van dykes is by far the best place to eat and stay around the local area!

“Amazing Hotel”

We got married here October 2011. We could not have chosen a more fantastic hotel to get married in. From booking the venue in 2010, the staff - especially Natalie (our wedding co-ordinator) could not do enough for us or bend enough for any of our demands! The food was superb both in the restaurant and on the actual day. Nothing was too much trouble, including adding a few tweaks to some of the buffet food at night.

The hotel itself was superb, a great mix of new and yet characterful at the same. We loved how all of the rooms are individually designed. The ballroom was very dynamic, used as the ceremony room, for the wedding breakfast and the evening do. Each time it looked great, loved the all the drapes, very elegant room. We loved it's uniqueness which is why we chose it, we didn't want a generic chain hotel and it's far from that.

We would like to say thank you for making our special day run smoothly and making it a fantastic day for all. We could not have asked for anything better on all fronts.

We would recommend this to anyone, a top hotel.
